Preface to the Wolfmoon Kindred Declaration of Values It is not unusual to hear heathens and Asatruar refer to one or another list of admirable characteristics called the Nine Noble Virtues. This list of personal standards for living is not specifically spelled out in any of our surviving Northern European lore; rather, it is believed to have been compiled in the mid-1970’s by an early Asatruar or Odinist group (name and location unknown) who are said to have arrived at the list by reading and distilling those virtues from the lore. Wolfmoon Kindred has a number of concerns about the Nine Noble Virtues. 1) We are not convinced that all of the characteristics listed can be substantiated by the lore. 2) We feel that several of the virtues listed are so similar or integrated in nature that it is redundant or misleading to list them separately. 3) There are several lists in circulation among heathens, all referred to as the Nine Noble Virtues, but that differ in one or more points. 4) Finally, the NNV read and feel very much like the “Asatruar’s Answer to the Ten Commandments.” This parallel makes us extremely uncomfortable. We do not believe it necessary or appropriate to follow a christian pattern in the expression of ourselves or our beliefs. Despite the fact that many heathens hold the Nine Noble Virtues in high esteem, Wolfmoon Kindred decided we could not uphold that list as an expression of our own beliefs. Instead, we felt a very strong desire to compile our OWN list of values—a list of the values that we share, that we know to stand as the very foundation of our Kindred and our commitment to each other. To arrive at our list, we spent long hours in reflection and remarkably intimate discussion. It important for visitors to this website to understand that we do not claim these values to be universally held heathen beliefs. Wolfmoon Kindred proudly claims this list of values to be uniquely our own. To the Wolfmoon Kindred Declaration of Values
